Following graduation, a significant part of his professional development/continuing education was obtained from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in nearby New York State, especially with a focus on epidemiology of infectious diseases, canine learning, feline health, and pet nutrition.

Subsequently, thesis research was completed in virology (corona viruses) in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa.

Currently adopting the “One Health" concept of comparative/environmental medicine, Dr. Cochrane actively participates in continuing professional development by attending lectures/courses presented by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, and International Veterinary Seminars (IVS).

Recently attended IVS conferences include:

  1. Surgery, Anesthesia, and Pain Management

  2. Inflammatory, Infectious, and Immune Diseases

In April 2024, Dr. Cochrane and practice manager Adèle attended the 73rd Annual Refresher Course for Family Physicians sponsored by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa where lectures were presented on the serious concerns regarding parasitic ticks in the province of Ontario, and the numerous controversies relating to the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme Disease in the human patient.

In July 2024, Dr. Cochrane attended the prestigious 36th Annual Fred Scott Feline Symposium organized by the Cornell Feline Health Center at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York - this is an in-person, comprehensive, three-day meeting of veterinarians and technicians, in which the following important topics in feline medicine and surgery were covered: pathophysiology and treatment of feline megacolon disease, common feline toxicities, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of feline urolithiasis, advances in perianesthetic pain management in cats, and the rapidly evolving world of feline coronaviruses.

As an astute clinician and “Appointed Veterinarian” with the Animal Health and Welfare Branch of OMAFRA for over 30 years, Dr. Cochrane has extensive experience relating to infectious diseases, applied animal behavior, pain management, and animal welfare. He is a strong proponent of preventive health care through essential core vaccinations, parasite prevention, and balanced nutrition.

A number of years were spent working with ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, USA Department of Justice) and their Canadian affiliate in the canine accelerant detection program, which involved integration of physiological systems, including sensory perception and communication applications in service (sniffer) dogs. Ongoing surveillance took place in order to monitor for changes in health and body condition, relating to certain occupational hazards in working dogs, such as a variety of chronic degenerative diseases (especially osteoarthritis) and neoplasia.

Bilingual practice manager, Adèle, with several years of teaching experience and information research skills, has expert knowledge on arthropod diseases, including tick-borne infections such as Lyme Disease and Bartonellosis.

Adèle has many resources at her fingertips to help explain to clients the numerous issues, concerns, and options available to help understand modern-day zoonotic parasitic conditions.
